Read between the lines

In this article, we will learn about one of the distinguishing characteristics of successful leaders, which is emotional intelligence.

I will not talk here about the definition of emotional intelligence or its importance, I will tell you a story that will clarify this, but before the story, I want you to share with me, dear reader, this simple test, in which I will ask you to tell me (in what color) the following words were written:

Red, yellow, orange, green, blue, grey, black, brown.

Now tell me frankly how many mistakes I made?

You may now ask, what does this have to do with our topic? I will answer you but after you read the story.

In one of the start-up companies in the market, the young Ali was employed in the telephone sales department, where he contacts customers and sells them the product. In fact, Ali was a “charismatic” person, fluent in talking and listening, when he talks to customers over the phone he seems like an expert that everyone consults in what they buy.

Customers love him for the sweetness of his tongue and his sharp wit, Ali was able to easily achieve double the number of sales required of him per month.

Then came the day that Ali missed work, called to apologize, and came back the next day to continue his work, but without enthusiasm.
Ali continued in this situation for a whole week, then completed the month without enthusiasm and with the lowest sales number, and the strange thing is that he turned to another person who comes to work late, does not care about meetings, and does not even show any interest in his manager’s instructions.

His manager tried a lot to direct him and modify his behavior at work. Once, he offered him a plan with a new sales number, promising him a reward, and once warning him of the possibility of losing his job if he continued to neglect this.

When he found that two months had passed in vain, he decided with the administration to dismiss Ali from his job. Even if this will cost the company to find and even train someone to fill his place, which means that the sales team will be back from achieving its goals by at least three months.

And here the manager went to tell him himself, perhaps he would learn and change his behavior if he could find another job.
As he walked towards Ali’s office, he was asking himself what Ali’s reaction would be when he knew that this was his last day in the company. The manager said to himself, “What a careless, careless employee, you really deserve everything that will happen to you.” He approached him, calling “Ali” …

I apologize to you, dear reader, let’s stop and not continue the story in this way, but we will reformulate it with another ending. Let’s start over:

In one of the market start-ups, the young Ali was hired in the telephone sales department, and Ali was a very successful employee, until that day came and everything changed.
He became careless and lazy, and since his boss was so emotionally intelligent, he realized that there was a reason why Ali was someone else. The manager did not use the human resources plans stipulated in the company’s policy of motivation and warning, as he realizes that Ali is not an innately negligent employee, but rather that there is a reason that Ali did not talk about, which is what stands behind this abnormal behavior.
One day the manager asked Ali to go with him to lunch at a restaurant near the company, and there the manager started talking about family, responsibilities and life and avoided talking about work. So he took out what he wanted to hear from Ali. When the director talked about the responsibilities of life and the inability of a person to carry them out sometimes, Ali’s eyes glazed over and he started talking about what he had discovered of his mother’s illness recently, and about his inability to treat her, and that her rare illness requires travel abroad, and no budget. If he worked for the company for two years, he would not be able to cover the costs of travel and treatment, and even her illness, he would not be patient with Ali for two years. Within days, if he was not treated, he would have killed his beloved mother.
Here the manager realized the reason behind Ali’s change, and the reason that Ali had not said before.

Just like the names of the colors that we read at the beginning of the article, we read the word “red” and in fact it is written “blue,” or we see the person as “neglected” and in fact “going through a crisis.”

Such is emotional intelligence, your ability to communicate and listen effectively, and most importantly, your ability to understand and understand what has not been said.

And now, dear reader, I owe you a new ending to Ali’s story.

After his manager realized that he had a reason for his neglect of this, he presented his company with a proposal to provide him with an advance on the condition that half of his salary be deducted for four years, and that he sign a contract not to leave his work for this period, and the company welcomed that, because the money was difficult for me alone to manage, But the institution could manage it without difficulty, which brought Ali back to his first behavior, the mother traveled and was treated. Ali succeeded in achieving a lot of sales, as he felt that he owed this success to his manager and his company, which he considered his second home, where he spends hours over his working hours tirelessly, succeeding, promoting and encouraging others.

Part of that success is thanks to a manager and leader with a lot of “emotional intelligence.”
